New Jailbreak on the way for iPhone iOS 4.1

It didn't take long for the Apple community to jailbreak the iPhone iOS 4.1, a reliable version will soon be out, caution is advised for now says the Blog from the boygeniusreport:

"Almost in unison with Apple releasing iOS 4.1, iOS tinkerer pod2g announced a bootrom exploit that will allow the jailbreaking community access to the innards of the California company’s mobile operating system. The exploit will eventually facilitate the next wave of iDevice jailbreaking, and isn’t something that can be plugged with a simple software update; Apple would have to flash a new bootrom to iPhones, etc. before they leave the factory. The iPhone Dev-Team is cautioning that all users steer clear of iOS 4.1 for the time being, but know that they — and others — are on the case.

UPDATE: We’re being told by someone who has knowledge about this exploit that in order to patch this particular bootrom hack Apple would need “a whole new processor rev.” A re-flashed or patched bootrom for the current hardware would not be sufficient."

Something that was commented on during antennagate was the lack of a field test mode for the iPhone after it was removed from iOS 4. Well 4.1 has it back in, simply call *3001#12345#* from your iPhone and the mode is activate with the dB reading present instead of the signal strength.

Skyfire submits browser app to the Apple Appstore

Here's hoping this one get's through the Apple meat-grinder, I like Skyfire and used it a lot on Windows Mobile...

Just last week, a couple of much-trusted birdies popped into the MobileCrunch office, claiming to have some details on SkyFire (a Flash-friendly mobile browser already available on a number of smartphone platforms) and its impending iPhone release. “They’ve entered the very final round of testing!” they said. “It’s going to get submitted to Apple early next week!”

We’re one day past what we’d personally consider “early next week”, but sure enough: SkyFire has just announced that they’ve submitted the browser for Apple’s oh-so-important stamp of approval. Start the timers, folks.

SkyFire is sure to be at least somewhat controversial, as it brings support for a good amount of the web’s Flash video content to a platform that very openly lacks it. We’ve all seen the mudslinging between Apple and Adobe on the matter of Flash on the iPhone, so to see it potentially find it’s way onto the handset in any form is interesting.
This is very good news, I like the Skyfire browser...

However, it’s worth noting (because it’s the primary reason SkyFire might not be instantly denied for breaking Apple’s guidelines): SkyFire doesn’t actually play, or interpret, or transcode Flash content on the handset. It uses a bit of proxy magic to remotely convert Flash video content into something a little more iPhone friendly, and then embeds that video content for playback at the user’s request. As a result of this conversion, SkyFire can handle Flash video — but most other Flash content (like games, or embedded music players) is a no go.

SkyFire seems to be pretty confident that they’ll get approved quick, saying that the application was developed “with significant oversight and feedback from Apple”, and that “it adheres to every guideline put forth by Apple regarding HTML5 video playback for iOS”.

I’m expecting to get a build of SkyFire for iPhone before the day is out, so check back in over the next few days for our early impressions, and maybe, just maaaybe (read: probably) some SkyFire-vs-Opera-vs-Safari speed tests.

Notifo - Now with user to user messaging & realtime Twitter notifications!

I spotted this in my MobileCrunch RSS feed. An interesting application called Notifo for the iPhone...

Last time we wrote about Notifo, we called it a “simple mobile notifications platform for anything” — and really, that’s probably the best way to describe it. You take your iPhone, install the Notifo app, hook it up to your favorite services (like Twitter, or GitHub) or any of the “Projects” (read: plugins, like Growl alert forwarding, or Chrome-to-Notifo ), and bam! You’ve got push notifications coming down to your iPhone from just about anything you could imagine.

All that notification sending takes two things: users to send the messages to, and a message pushing backend to handle all the heavy lifting — the same two things, as it just so happens, that one would need to create a basic instant messaging service. And so they have.

In an update to their iPhone app that went live this afternoon, Notifo launched a service they’ve had in the making for about four months: free text and picture messaging. Alas, it’s only built for messages from Notifo-user-to-Notifo-user, rather than Notifo-to-phone-numbers — but with all that messaging going on between users and the backend, connecting users with each other was really just the obvious next step.

Turn your iPhone into a Microscope, cheaply!

"These odd images were all taken using an iPhone cleverly equipped with a 45x microscope. The best part though? You can add such an upgrade to your own iPhone for about $10. The video above claims that the iPhone microscope modification costs only five dollars, but we've found that the microscope used—an SE Mini 45X—will run you about seven dollars on average and that the case you'll attach it to will be another three bucks.

That aside though, the project is pretty simple. All you're doing is attaching the microscope's viewfinder to your case and securing that to your iPhone. It's that easy and you can create images like the ones in the video or here:"
"For all the benefits of touchscreen keyboards, there are many who maintain a steadfast allegiance to the gods of tactile feedback. So how does this Mini Key case with sliding QWERTY for the iPhone 4 strike you?
Unfortunately, the keys were a bit hard to press on the backlit prototype keypad handled by Engadget Spanish, and it links to the iPhone via Bluetooth, not the iPhone's dock connector (there's a cutout at the bottom for a cable to pass through).

And no, all that added bulk still doesn't include an extended life battery pack.
Apple iOS 4.1 Coming Next Week, iOS 4.2 Coming in November

Steve Jobs, speaking at an event in San Francisco yesterday, officially announced iOS 4.1, an upcoming update for Apple's operating system for the iPhone and iPod touch. This company's CEO also gave a sneak peek at iOS 4.2, which will bring new features to the iPad.

Apple iPhone OS 4.0: Game KitiOS 4.1 is going to include a few enhancements, most notably the release of the Game Center. This social networking service for mobile gamers was first unveiled several months ago, but is just now being released.

Game Center will allow users to play head-to-head games, challenge friends, etc.

Most of the other enhancements are more minor, such as improvements to the camera's image quality and the ability to upload high definition video over a Wi-Fi connection.

iOS 4.1 will also include a fix for the proximity sensor issue that some iPhone 4 users have reported. This causes the screen to turn itself back on during phone calls.

Versions of this software upgrade for recent iPhone and iPod touch models will be released next week. They will be available for free.

Apple iOS 4.2 Pre-announced
Steve Jobs had good news and bad news for iPad users today. They aren't getting a version of iOS 4.1, so they will have to continue to use iOS 3.2 for several more months. Near the end of this year, however, iOS 4.2 will be released for this tablet computer.

Read a Review of Apple iOS 4.0This will bring many highly-anticipated features to the iPad, including multitasking and application folders.

In addition, iOS 4.2 is going to allow users to do wireless printing.

This new operating system version will be released for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in November.

Mexican technology site canal-mx is reporting that Apple will be redesigning its iPhone 4 antenna and that the redesigned handsets will be available after September 30th.

The news (rumour) comes from Marco Quatorze, Tecel’s Director of Value Added Services. Telcel recently began offering the iPhone 4 to its customers and Mr. Quatorze was on the record when he explained that his company would have the same version of the iPhone 4 that is sold in the U.S.; complete with antenna attenuation issues. He noted that Telcel’s customers would be eligible for a free case until September 30.

Quatorze then stated that after the 30th a new revision of the iPhone 4, with some sort of internal antenna fix, would be made available by Apple. The news, if true, certainly will rekindle the antenna-gate talks, and no doubt bring to life raging existing iPhone 4 owners demanding a new machine!

Apple runs from O2's handset enviro-spec rating

O2 has added environmental impact to its handset specifications, rating the Palm Pre as the worst while Sony Ericsson's Elm left the smallest footprint.

Not just green either - ethical policies such as labour standards and employee safety are included too, so suicides at Foxconn won't do Apple any good. That will, however, play well with Nokia and Sony Ericsson who've both adopted a wider green agenda. Apple may have greened up its manufacturing processes, but it's less forthcoming about unrelated initiatives.

More than seven per cent of the rating comes from the packaging too - another area where the iPhone isn't going to score well, and Apple's failure to adopt MicroUSB charging counts against it too.

Apple was apparently approached to take part, but declined to get involved, while RIM is planning to rate its handsets next year. Given that it apparently takes 20 minutes to rate a handset, once you've got the official spreadsheet from O2, we're obliged to assume that both companies gave it a shot and didn't like what they saw.
Our iPad owners may be interested in this just approved by the FCC in the USA.

It's a combined case and Bluetooth keyboard.

Straight from the ever original halls of Chinese designers, comes one of the most natural combinations of accessories I’ve ever seen: a dual iPad case and bluetooth keyboard. The keyboard battery is said to last 90 hours of use, or 100 days on standby, so you just use your iPad normally, and when you want to get some heavy typing done, just bust out the keyboard. Honestly, I’m surprised its taken this long to combine the two.

Downside? It looks like it might be a soft, silicone keyboard, which isn’t nearly as good to type on as a scissor-switch keyboard that you find on most laptops.

Apple applying for more Big Brother Patents

PC Pro are reporting Apple has filed some more Patent applications for various technologies which I would class as Big Brother!

What a bunch of control freaks....

Just weeks after the US Authorities deemed it legal to jailbreak your iPhone, along comes Apple with new tactics to block it out again!

I quote...

Apple has filed a patent for a system to identify stolen and jailbroken devices, which could use the handset to tell on thieves by monitoring heartbeats and "vibration profiles".

If developed, the system being patented would help the company identify "unauthorised users of an electronic device" in order to alert the phone's owner or shut it down.

While the system is designed to deal with stolen handsets, the patent explicitly mentions jailbreaking as a sign a device has been stolen, and could mean Apple is able to shut down such cracked handsets.

The patent application includes a system to detect and deal with "hacking the electronic device, jailbreaking the electronic device, unlocking the electronic device, removing a SIM card from the electronic device, and moving at least a predetermined distance away from a synced device."

Some of the methods Apple is mooting to detect unauthorised users include making use of the phone's camera to compare photos of the owner with the user, voice recognition, and even measuring heart beats, to compare it to the "heart signature of the owner".

The patent also describes using the accelerometer to record a "vibration profile" so Apple can "determine a current mode of transportation of the electronic device."

Once it's determined the user isn't authorised, the phone's owner can be notified via "subtle" ways such as text or email, and the phone can be locked down, wiped or traced - similar to other handset security systems. This system would also let Apple monitor the use of the stolen phone, to see calls made and websites visited.

Anyone else worried about Apple at the moment?

7 inch iPad rumours strengthen

Engadget.com are reporting the possible release of a 7 inch iPad, if true I wonder if some of you current iPad owners had wished you had waited for a more compact version??!!

"The 7-inch iPad rumors are suddenly hot and heavy. In the last few weeks, we've seen a series of reports claiming that Apple was working on a smaller iPad (or bigger iPod touch?) set for release between the end of 2010 or early 2011. A DigiTimes piece, sourcing its own "analyst," claimed that the device would be making a jump to the Cortex A9 processor core, 512MB of RAM like the iPhone 4, and a 1,024 x 768 pixel IPS panel -- the same resolution as the 9.7-inch iPad giving the new model a better pixel density. Now we've got Taiwan's Economic Daily News saying that Chi Mei will join LG in supplying the new 7-inch IPS panels with AUO joining Sintek to provide the digitizer. EDN also claims that either Compal or Pegatron may join Foxconn in the assembly. Remember, even with hints of a new iPad model in Apple's own code this is all just rumor for now. Besides, we're still waiting for those Xbox 360 Blu-ray drives that the Economic Daily News assured us were coming in Q3 of 2008."

Apple abandon iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G users!

On Wednesday, Apple (finally) released firmware 4.0.2, which patches the very large security holes exploited by @comex in the 2nd incarnation of jailbreakme.com. The only problem is they outright abandoned iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G users! Even though Apple acknowledges in their security update the severity of these holes, they left iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G owners high and dry — completely vulnerable to truly malicious variants of jailbreakme (these variants aren’t out yet, but they’re sure to come!).

Luckily for Apple, the Jailbreak community isn’t so callous. @saurik has been burning the midnight oil coding a Cydia package that will fix the holes for all devices and all firmware versions (even going back to version 2.x!). It will be released very soon, after some more testing is done.

Since the only reason for 4.0.2 was to fix the security holes, and since the upcoming Cydia package will fix them too (and then some!), everybody should sit tight on 4.0.1 (or lower) and install the Cydia package as soon as it’s out. Jailbreakers can have their cake and eat it too.

P.S. Dear Apple: you’re welcome!

Apple iOS 4 upgrade screws up car stereo connectivity

Over on the Apple Support forums a large amount of users saying that their car stereos are no longer working with Apples iOS 4 update. Users report that after updating an iPhone (or iPod) to iOS 4, plugging the phone into the cars integrated stereo create errors indicating the device is "Not compatible".

The thread, which is just under 400 replies as of writing, has hundreds of disgruntled users. Apparently, devices using iOS 4 are not compatible unless the manufacturers bother to update the firmware on the head units, which seems highly irregular.

iPad vs Windows 7 Slate

Gizmodo have a nice little comparison going of the iPad against a developing Windows 7 Slate device.

I quote from Gizmodo....

What happens when a Windows 7 tablet takes on the iPad head to head in a series of every day usage battles? This video happens. Place your bets!

The Hanvon Windows 7 slate shown here is presumably one of the many Windows 7 tablets Microsoft expects by year's end. The surprise here isn't that the Hanvon's a clear winner—it's not—but more that it's able to at least keep up with (and often beat out) the iPad while also including a camera, USB, SD card slot, and a trackpad. With all that comes an unpleasant blockiness, though, and I'm guessing the battery life on this thing doesn't compare.

More Rumors About the Next Generation iPads

According to an article published by Digitimes earlier today, Apple will launch the next generation of its iPad in the first quarter of 2011, about a year after the launch of the first generation of the device.

As we reported earlier (see here and here), the next-gen iPad will come in 2 flavors, sporting 9.7-inch and 7-inch screens, respectively. However, Digitimes is now expecting the next-gen iPads to sport processor upgrades, as both flavors will likely come with Apple’s own version of the ARM Cortex A9 processor – in comparison, the original iPad comes with a customized ARM Cortex A8 processor (dubbed Apple A4). When compared to the A8, the A9 offers more features, such as multi-core capabilities, as well as higher clock speeds.

The new 9.7-inch iPad will also come with a memory boost: the main system memory will jump from 256MB to 512MB, just like the iPhone 4. As for the 7-inch iPad, it seems that the possibility for an OLED screen has been abandoned, as it is expected to come with an IPS panel, just like the original iPad and the iPhone 4. Also note that despite the smaller 7-inch screen, the screen resolution will remain at 1024×768, which means that the 7-inch iPad will boast a much higher pixel density per square inch than the 9-inch iPad, just like the iPhone 4’s retina display.

As usual, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt – note that they are coming from many independent sources though.

Apple goes "Amorphous" with metal

It looks like Apple is making worthwhile steps forward in housing technologies and at the same time blocking others (or trying to) from the same market. Ars Technica is reporting:

Future iPhones, iPods, and other Apple-flavored gadgets may be made out of "amorphous" metal alloys thanks to a deal that Apple has made with Liquidmetal Technologies. Liquidmetal revealed that it has entered into an exclusive agreement with Apple via an 8K filing it made with the Securities and Exchange Commission, giving Apple access to its entire intellectual property portfolio.

Liquidmetal's technology is used in the fields of sports, medicine, space, jewelry, and of course, electronics. Whereas a typical metal has a crystalline atomic structure (a repeating pattern of crystals), an "amorphous" metal alloy basically has no crystals. This allows manufacturers to tweak the precise configuration of the alloy without worrying about the usual structural or strength limitations.

As such, Liquidmetal brags that its products are not only strong and resistant to impact/fatigue, they are also lighter than comparable products made out of normal metals.

The agreement between the two companies was signed last Thursday, but was not revealed until the publication of the 8K this morning. Liquidmetal's technology has previously been used in Nokia and Sandisk products, but no more—Apple now has "perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercialize such intellectual property in the field of consumer electronic products."

iPad gets Xvid AVI playback with CineXplayer

Engadget are reporting the iTunes app store are selling CineXplayer for the iPad. Have Apple gone soft, has Hell frozen over, is someone else about to lose their job once Mr Jobs finds out?

I quote...

Now here's a surprise. Apple isn't exactly known to be super friendly when it comes to video compatibility, and we can sympathize to an extent. However, for some inexplicable reason, Steve's brethren decided to give this CineXPlayer app the green light for general consumption, thus finally allowing iPad users to load up their stash of Xvid AVI files -- sans conversion -- via iTunes. While this is worth a quick celebration, it's still rather absurd having to resort to underhanded apps for such basic functionality -- something that we've been able to do natively on many other tablets and PMPs for years. Let's not also assume that this free app is staying for good, so grab it while it's hot.

There's a video too....

I'd grab this while you can, you never know when Apple may change their mind!

Mark Papermaster canned due to Antenna debacle?

Mark Papermaster, the former IBM exec who sparked a lawsuit when he tried to move to Apple in 2008, has now left Apple for greener pastures.

The New York Times confirmed with Apple that Papermaster was no longer working there, though it was unclear whether he had quit or was let go. Papermaster was Senior VP of Devices Hardware Engineering, and in charge of the hardware for the iPhone 4 so needless to say with the recent issues over the design of the iPhone 4 antenna hardware I think it's pretty clear that Jobs has found his scapegoat in Papermaster and he's been let go!
