Ok,
Here it goes:  The bad news is that I am so disappointed with the poor performance of the Java (Dalvik/Android) version that I am putting it aside for now.
The good?  Thanks to the brilliant people behind the Android os, the NDK allowed me to port 95% of (Legacy 2010) uBook in two weeks:

It is (not too) far from finished, the fonts are the big item on my list.
Otherwise, here's the APK for you to try:

uBook Legacy for Android

It works on my (Canadian) black Pandigital (Android 1.5) and on the emulator (Android 2.2), both with good speed results.

More to come...

Glad to see growth of the product! Makes me proud to be a reg'd owner!  I'll give it a go on my Droid Incredible running Verizon original Froyo (2.2) and report back the results.

Oh this is good news indeed!

Hmm I'll have to copy raw books as well as ePub onto the machine now :)

I guess, until I add better epub handling...  But I have a list of issues first, starting with fonts.

Great, it's usable - well only just, I really need to be able to make the fonts larger.  But it's great to have books that look like books on a paper like background.

Where do I put the licence file for Ubook to recognise it? Android doesn't let me see where Ubook is installed. The only sensible choices that I can think of are the folder I'm using for my library or the device root.

I got it loaded but was unable to navigate on to the SD card to load any books. On the Desire I just ended up going up and up and up...

Working fine on my Desire.  Took a while to remember how I used to configure the settings, but functionality is just like it was on WM 6.
