Penultimate, the original and best-selling handwriting app for iPad, is today introducing photo and image support, enabling users to add pictures to their notebooks, resize and rotate them, and even handwrite notes on them. The new version also offers a significantly improved version of its pioneering Wrist Protection mode, allowing writers with styluses to rest their wrists on the glass.
Photo and image support opens Penultimate to entirely new creative and business uses for out-in-the-field professionals, including design, annotation, and cataloging. Photos can be selected from the user's image library—or taken directly with the camera of an iPad 2—after which they are dropped into the user's notebook page.
Images in Penultimate look and behave like real photos: when written on, the handwritten ink will move with the picture as it is repositioned on a page. Moving, resizing, and rotation of images are all supported.
Introduced alongside photo support is a new optional paper collection, "Photo Pages", which includes several simple but useful paper templates for photo albums. Penultimate will automatically size and locate imported photos when using one of these papers. The "Photo Pages" collection is available in the in-app Paper Shop for a small additional price.
Penultimate's advanced automatic Wrist Protection feature has been completely overhauled, and is now effective for a much larger percentage of stylus and finger writers. Users simply select their writing position once from a clearly-illustrated settings panel, after which they can write naturally on the glass surface.
"The original Wrist Protection mode was effective, but many users, especially left-handed ones with unusual writing grips, saw room for improvement," said Ben Zotto, the developer of Penultimate. "I’m very excited by the new advances in this functionality, which uses very powerful technology under the hood, yet still requires no fussy, obstructive interaction during writing."
Since its release, Penultimate for iPad has achieved the #1 sales position in the iTunes App Store multiple times, in the US and many other countries. Penultimate is available for only $.99 in the App Store. Version 3.1 is a free update for all existing users.
