Not happened in last 3 sessions so I have reduced problem to intermittent which is better than  the 50/50 it was before so am not miserable about it. There MAY be correlation with regards the volume icon disappearing on boot up because that happened again despite my disabling of the sound manager and I think it was that session which hung again...

Disabling the sound manager may not be enough, you may have to disable it if you can or do a Windows Repair if you can't....

I'd try creating a new user account on the PC, and using that one for a while. Move all of your data out of the "My Documents" structure and into a non user specific folder of your choice so you are not using anything from the old profile.

Latest... not resolved yet but the issue only seems to occur approx one in ten shutdowns so can live with that for time being.

As per the other thread I still think a Windows 7 migration would resolve your issues.
